Flock together

  • A bird in the hand
  • The early bird
  • Don’t count your chickens
  • A little bird told me
  • Naked as a jay bird
  • As the crow flies
  • Got your feathers ruffled
  • Free as a bird
  • Cold turkey
  • Chickens come home to roost
  • Birds of a feather
  • Feather your nest
  • Eat crow
  • Eat like a bird
  • Bird brain

Douglas Lake, awaiting spring rains

Even in winter East Tennessee has a special beauty. This is Douglas Lake drawn down in December with the venerable Great Smoky Mountains in the background. In the summer the water reaches all the way from the silo to the channel in the far distance. We are fortunate to call this region our home. -James

Ladies and Gentlemen....the Dark Hollow Band

On August 21, 2004 The Dark Hollow Band played at the Historic Bijou Theater. This event may have been the pinnacle of their aspirations. The portable "jumbotron" overhead was built by James. You could almost imagine playing a super stadium gig.

How 'bout that Dark Hollow Band?

Indie music from Fire Pony Productions. Hard to find but worth the effort. Call it Folk & Roll. Photo by Juan, enhanced by Diego.

got oil?

With the cost of crude...and dirty coal... with the fantasy of wind, solar, and geothermal wafting through the marinol pipe dreams of blue staters... this 1976 book is looking downright prescient: The Health Hazards of NOT Going Nuclear.

Canoeing on Lake Calderwood

Not easy to reach and too narrow for water skiers...Lake Calderwood is a 7 mile long unspoiled gem. It is fed by the Little Tennessee River system and spans the border between North Carolina and Tennessee just south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Interstate 3 has been proposed to run from Knoxville to Savannah. The route would bisect the lake and put gash through the Cherokee National Forest. They say it is needed in the name of national security. I think they just want to build property values in north Georgia and the Atlantic coast. Hopefully there are enough opponents.

it's a virtual flamingo world

To some the Flamingo is the embodiment of kitsch. A few of us are enamored with all things flamingoid. It seems the figurines have virtually disappeared from curio shops. Still we seek. -James

Goodbye, Tance

In the early days there was this log cabin. Her father died of appendicitis when she was 5. Her mother never remarried, took in sewing, and raised 3 kids on her own. Tance was the last of a generation. We bid her adieu.

Not For Sale

Wanted: Brass Plant Stand with lots of character. This one has withstood many seasons. The coppery patina, with hints of turquoise, would look good on a certain red brick porch I know. I don't blame the shop keeper for bolting it down. -James
